A brief thought on guns in America…

--

As the founding fathers were putting together this amazing experiment in democracy their one overarching concern was did they have a sufficiently informed and enlightened populace capable of making the intelligent choices necessary for a mature and appropriate political will.

Otherwise, men like Jefferson, Adams and Franklin, feared the country would devolve into the hands of despots, zealots and the like.

Now after nearly 250 years and countless challenges at home and abroad, their fears are being played out.

Strangely enough the despots, zealots and the like appear before us now as a corrupt Congress, a gun industry that puts profit above common sense and a huge swath of conservative fundamentalists who mistakenly believe the Second Amendment was intended to allow a housewife in Texas to carry an AK-47.

There is a term in biology called statis in which an organism becomes inactive because a certain equillibrium has been reached. I fear that’s what is going on in America today. Millions of Americans and most of the rest of the world look on in pure bewilderment at a situation that no one can figure out how to change.

So let us do the following:

Apologize to the founding fathers for making their fears come true.

Shed a tear for what’s become of a great country.

Shed a tear for those who have died and will die because of this.

But please don’t stop trying to figure out a way to change that equillibrium.

I would like to once again be proud of my country.
