Doreen, good article. Certainly better than other articles about Cuba I’ve read on Medium. I am an American born son of Cuban immigrants, so I guess you can put me in with the right wing Miami Cubans. I appreciate how you were very clear about the poverty and lack of opportunity and freedom that afflicts the Cuban people. I do want to comment about the idea that improved relations between Cuba and the US will “save” and “ruin” Cuba. Cuba has has had relations with the rest of the world since the US embargo started. The US embargo is NOT the cause of the misery and suffering of the Cuban people; the cause is a failed socialist, totalitarian government. You are right that the recent developments in US-Cuba relations have led to mixed feelings in the Cuban-American community. The Castros and the revolution did murder thousands that stood in their way and ruined a way of life for the millions that have fled. The sentiment in Miami is “vamos a ver lo que pasa”… let’s see what happens.
