Portal From New York To Dublin: A Missed Opportunity

From the moment I heard that artist Benediktas Gylys had opened a portal from Dublin Ireland to New York, I knew it wasn’t going to be the wishy-washy We Are The World love fest that he intended it to be.

The Portal, a giant webcam with a fancy name that live streams between the two cities was meant to break down borders and bring people together. What we got were drunk Irish people flipping the bird, drunkenly grinding up against the camera and some showing pictures of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

And I am not one bit surprised.

Dublin and me

Now, I am not here to lambast my home country of Ireland. I fucking could, I got the ammo, but I won't. However, I will lambast Dublin City Council for allowing this Portal to be placed on O’Connell Street. A street that is notorious for drunkards, undesirables, and unfortunate souls such as the homeless.

Yes, on paper, O’Connell Street might seem like the perfect place. It is, after all, quite pretty, with its historic statues and buildings but it’s a mess during the day and especially at night and has…
