This year, our Instacart Serves social impact program has been committed to fighting rising hunger in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to rising unemployment levels, Feeding America estimates that more than 50 million people may experience food insecurity, including 17 million children, in 2020.

To help support families in need this holiday season, Instacart team members opened their hearts and Instacart accounts for our third annual Week of Service with a #GiveFromTheCart Virtual Food Drive to benefit our local community food banks as well as Feeding America and Food Banks Canada.

Starting on Giving Tuesday, team members placed hundreds of Instacart orders of pantry essentials that food banks need most and had them delivered to local food banks across North America, including Atlanta Community Food Bank, Greater Chicago Food Depository, Food Bank for New York City, San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, and Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto.

Collectively the Instacart team sent 445 food bank orders with thousands of pantry staples to the local food banks, and in turn, Instacart donated 500,000 meals to Feeding America and Food Banks Canada, which collectively support more than 700 food banks across North America.

Furthermore, actress, entrepreneur, and Instacart fan Kate Hudson was inspired by the team’s efforts and joined our fight against rising hunger. To support our giving efforts, Kate matched our 500,000 meal donation goal to Feeding America, and together we donated 1 million meals to those who need it most this holiday season.

In 2020, we’re proud to have donated 5.5 million meals to communities in need and look forward to doing more in 2021 to help stem rising food insecurity.

A special thank you to the amazing Instacart team for giving the gift of groceries and the incredible Instacart shoppers who helped deliver the donations to those in need this holiday season.
