The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia has escalated further with the increased use of drones to carry out attacks. The conflict has taken on both military and political dimensions, with both sides engaging in covert operations.

On Wednesday the Kremlin claimed that Ukraine attempted to strike the Kremlin with drones, but failed to do so due to the timely actions taken by the military and special services. Russia viewed the attempted attack as a “planned terrorist action” and an attempt on the life of the president ahead of Victory Day on May 9. Ukraine has not publicly commented on the matter.

In separate incidents involving drones, oil facilities in Ukraine and Russia were targeted. Ukrainian officials reported that a Russian drone strike on an oil depot in the city of Kropyvnytskyi caused a major fire. As a result of the drone attack, a “large-scale fire started.” Emergency services were on the scene, and there were no casualties. Similarly, a major fire that broke out at a fuel depot in a village in the southwestern Russian region of Krasnodar near the Crimean bridge was caused by a drone. Extinguishing the fire is ongoing, and there are no casualties. Rail deliveries to Russia’s nearby Black Sea port of Taman will be restricted until further notice.

In another incident, a woman accused of assassinating a prominent Russian military blogger said she did not know the true content of the parcel she handed him in a St Petersburg cafe a month ago. Darya Trepova is now in detention in Moscow on terrorism charges, accused of cooperating with Ukrainian special services to kill Maxim Fomin, who had written a popular blog about Russia’s military campaigns in Ukraine, Syria, and other countries. Trepova claimed she was set up and was “insanely sorry” for delivering the bomb that killed him.

These incidents reflect the ongoing tensions and conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The use of drones to carry out attacks is a new development and shows that both sides are adapting to the changing nature of warfare. The conflict has also taken on a political dimension, with both sides engaging in covert operations. These incidents can potentially have significant economic consequences and could escalate the conflict further.

As the conflict continues, it is essential to find a diplomatic solution to prevent it from causing further damage to both countries and their people. The international community must work together to facilitate dialogue between Ukraine and Russia to reach a peaceful resolution. The human cost of this conflict cannot be overstated, and innocent civilians on both sides continue to bear the brunt of the violence.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia is far from over, and the use of drones to carry out attacks is a reminder that the nature of warfare is constantly evolving. The international community must act swiftly to prevent the conflict from escalating further and find a peaceful solution to end the violence.
