After it was found that Apple was slowing down older iPhones, Apple issued an apology. In essence, Apple was slowing down models of iPhones, 6 onwards, due to aging lithium batteries. With repeated usage of batteries, they become less reliable and may be prone to “result in a device unexpectedly shutting itself down in some situations.” A solution to this issue was to completely replace the battery.

In response to the public reaction, Apple took 3 major steps. First, they issued a public apology. Next, they announced that they will be changing the prices of replacement batteries. The price will be reduced from 79 USD to 29 USD. Finally, they planned to release a software update — iOS 11.3 — which would make the battery saver mode optional.

Although Apple recommends keeping the battery saver mode on for a prolonged dependable life of an iPhone, you may gain more performance by turning it off. By replacing the battery, the performance returns to a near new state.
