Where to Launch?
In a huge press-event last week, Rocket Lab announced it would be building its second launchpad in the United States, on Wallops Island at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport.
Space startups usually don’t have much cash to spare, and constructing one’s own launchpad from scratch can be very expensive. Yes, each launch company has varying infrastructure needs, but wouldn’t it be nice to launch from someplace that has most, if not all, of the ground support equipment you need?
Good news!
There are launch sites and spaceports all over the world currently in operation, and some that are up-and-coming, that are looking for space startups to come their way. Here are a few you may not have heard about:
- Spaceport Sweden — A pioneering initiative to establish commercial human spaceflight in Kiruna
- Spaceport Camden — Developing a successful world-class spaceport through a public-private partnership
- Shetland Space Centre — Space Centre on UK’s most Northerly Island
- Alaska Aerospace — Providing access to planetary orbital space for commercial and government interests
- Equatorial Launch Australia — Striving to be Australia’s first commercial spaceport
