Demo Night at Dawson was a Hit!!

November 15 was DEMO NIGHT for the gang from Montreal NewTech, and what a lineup of Montreal startups we had on hand. This particular night was also made special because it was part of Entrepreneurship Week at Dawson College here in Montreal.

A Great Turnout for Montreal NewTech Demo night on Nov 15, 2016

The lineup of 7 impressive startups was presented by our partners Dawson College, Lighthouse Labs and the Ministère de l’économie et de l’innovation du Québec.

  1. SPORTLOGiQ — Co-Founder, Craig Buntin

In the information age, it only makes sense that big data and analytics be applied in the big money world of professional sports. A former Olympic athlete, Craig Buntin saw the opportunity to provide such a service to teams in the NHL and has never looked back. SPORTLOGiQ graduated from the TandemLaunch incubator in St-Henri in 2014 and has been growing steadily ever since. They now count 18 of the NHL’s 30 teams among their customers, and also provide services to 5 major broadcast networks on both sides of the border. In fact Mark Cuban, owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and well known Shark Tank judge even decided to invest last year after Buntin contacted him directly.

2. Uvolt — CEO & Founder, Marc-Antoine Bonin

Winner of 10 startup and innovation prizes in the last 12 months, Uvolt is another ingenious idea incubated at Concordia’s District 3. And with a Kickstarter campaign planned for March 2017, nothing can stop these guys now! Uvolt is essentially a stylish watch that gathers and stores both thermal and kinetic energy. This renewable / green power source can then be used for any number of things, including extending the battery life of your smart phone for example.

Therefore it serves as fashion accessory, time piece, battery, phone charger and renewable energy generator… not bad! Check them out at uvolt.ca

3. KirMaq Tech — Founder, Nassim Kirouac

This ugly thing may actually change the way your household runs one day! While the ergonomics of this hardware leave something to be desired, it does work properly.

This item, the S-Cube3, works with an app on your smartphone and allows you to control electronic devices from anywhere in the world with a wi-fi connection. Pretty sweet!

Nassim also mentioned that the company is currently looking for help in dev, design, marketing as well as investment… let’s help them out and spread the word!

4. Hardbacon — Founder, Julien Brault

Harbacon is in the highly competitve Fin-Tech space, and their objective is to make investing accessible to everyone. Yes, everyone!

Sounds like a big job but they are off to a good start. Hardbacon has a great team of marketers, finance people and content producers hard at work “bacon” up some insightful content in both languages. They also plan to offer courses, educate people in investing and help their users cut out the big banks and investment houses who take big fees for sometimes not providing much help or insight.

As Julien so eloquently stated, “73% of millennials would rather go to the dentist than to their local bank”, and with those kinds of numbers, services like the one he has created can only grow!

Julien was obviously stunned by one of the questions from the audience

5. Flavour Chat — Co-Founder, Zhenglin Xiong

Flavour Chat is a social discovery app that brings gamification to socializing by helping you find “Food Buddies”.

Tired of eating lunch alone at work? Really feel like going for pho with someone tonight? Flavour Chat to the rescue!

This app provides a “Chat Game” between users to help break the ice and build a bond between users in order to avoid any potential awkwardness when you meet a stranger for lunch.

This app can be used for networking, meeting new people and just getting a group together to enjoy your favorite restaurant.

6. Wanabai — Co-Founder, David Claude

David came to Dawson to tell us about the service he has created to help local business resist, and even leverage some of the forces of online commerce. Unlike other apps such as Yelp, Wanabai is completely visual and is not entirely based on user recommendations. There’s an element of Pinterest in what they do.

Merchants pay just $7 per month to use this service which can attract tourists and locals alike. They can also cancel any time, so it’s even great for a seasonal business. David calls it “the Netflix of hyper-local advertising”.

7. Lickstats — CEO & Founder, Sun Knudsen

Possibly the best presentation of the evening was saved for last, and certainly one of the most interesting products during this demo night. Lickstats is a kind of online tracking tool used by brands and publishers to see who and how many people have clicked on their links… and which of them converted. Their slogan is Lickstats tracks the untrackable… Take a look at this presentation in it’s entirety here, and be the judge for yourself! It’s like bit.ly on steroids!

As always, don’t forget to follow Montreal NewTech on Facebook and Twitter or just check out our website for all the details on our upcoming events. See you at our next demo night!!!
