Black Lives Matter
“There was a forum up there for me if I choose to use it and I choose to use it.” — Bill Russell, 11x NBA Champion, first black head coach in the NBA
For the past few months, the call-to-action for our community was to #stayinthegame and be #inthistogether. All of this means nothing without stating unequivocally that Black Lives Matter.
HomeCourt would not exist if it wasn’t for basketball; and basketball as a culture and as a community, would not exist as it is today without black culture and the black community.
Our black communities are hurting. Members of our HomeCourt community are hurting. More than ever, we need to be #inthistogether and take action.
This month, we will be donating funds to Equal Justice Initiative, an organization “committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, to challenging racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society.”
Dribble and Speak Up
We also cannot be silent on these issues. To be silent is to be complicit.
We will dribble AND speak up.
To help give everyone a voice this month, we will be hosting a #blacklivesmatter initiative directly on the HomeCourt app. Every dribble workout recorded in this challenge will carry a #blacklivesmatter call-to-action so our community can share their voice through their work on HomeCourt.
There will also be a direct link to the Equal Justice Initiative on the challenge page where you can learn more about the issues and donate. Expect this to be up and available in the app globally by next week.
We encourage the HomeCourt community to make your voices heard here and on other platforms.
This is Not Enough
We readily acknowledge that we have a lot more work to do here as an organization and as individuals.
We need to challenge ourselves to look inward on where we have fallen short of our values and standards and encourage our communities to be on this lifelong journey with us.
We all have a responsibility to do our part and look forward to making a better world together. We are one team.
