Transforming ‘Mistakes’ Into Golden Keys

Unearthing hidden doorways you didn’t know existed.

A brass key laying in the earth and leaves

It just happened again. I discovered a new possibility by making a small mistake with what I was attempting to do.

I love it when this happens. Today it was attempting to scroll up a page on my laptop by dragging two fingers up on my touchpad. Accidentally three fingers touched at the same time and a whole new screen appeared showing me all the apps I have open. I didn’t even know that was possible.

That last statement is gold. A whole new way to navigate emerged by doing a familiar thing slightly differently.

I’ve surprised myself like this on my new phone several times.

I love the reminder in these random occurrences that if it is possible here, then it is possible everywhere.

What happens if I make intentional adjustments to familiar behaviours? How could that shift my reality?

If you want something to be different you need to take different actions. And taking different actions often requires new options to choose from. You can create these options for yourself by letting your imagination run wild.

Changes can (and often do) happen without conscious choice (like when I fell over this morning walking the same familiar path back to my cabin. (ouch!) Not a change I want to continue. The gift however, being a reminder to be present in the moment when walking on uneven ground.

Change can also take place by making intentional micro (or macro if you wish but I prefer to work gradually) adjustments. Here’s a few simple things you could try. And… I invite you to write your own personal list:

Change the order of your morning routine.
Take a different route to a familiar destination.
Speak slightly more slowly than you usually do.
Have tea instead of coffee (or visa versa).
Add a couple of skips to your walk.
Pause the mental busyness and listen to your body for 30 seconds.
Play a new piece of music while you’re making lunch.
Go to the farmers market instead of the supermarket.
Wear your hair a different way… you get the drift.

The list is infinite. And that’s the point. Diversity and new possibility in your life is infinite. It’s all up to you and your capacity to choose and create.

Make a shift.

See if the changes you create work for you.

If so, integrate them.

If not, beep, shift, and go again! The experimental possibilities are endless.
