The way we pay is changing. Thanks to modern technology, there are more ways to spend and exchange than ever before. Wallets are moving from something we keep in our pocket, to a digital interface kept in the cloud.

Payments touch upon many areas of our business — from paying in the showroom to buying accessories online. But why are new ways to pay important to Porsche?

In this article, we’ll take a look at our partnership with the global payments platform Adyen and how we optimize the payment processes at Porsche together.

How does a sports car manufacturer approach payments?

The experience our customers have is key to our business and digital payments can improve efficiency, customer experience, and increase security. When someone visits our website porsche.com to search for cars or other Porsche products and services, we want to provide seamless and enjoyable customer journeys, from browsing products to paying during checkout.

By using Adyen’s payment infrastructure, Porsche can tokenize customers’ cards, saving payment data completely securely. Customers that own a Porsche ID do not need to re-enter their payment details each time they make a purchase, which results in faster, frictionless transactions.

How can customers buy sports cars online?

Together with Adyen we have conceptualized, designed, and implemented the payment setup for the Porsche digital sales channel offering, while Porsche Financial Services provides Financing and Leasing. ‘Adyen For Platforms’ allows us in the future to onboard Porsche dealers at scale, allowing our customers to pay for new and used cars online and make down-payments. In this way, we facilitate the end-to-end value chain for buyers and sellers.

Porsche will extend this channel to create a marketplace for Porsche products and services. It will become a digital space that brings together buyers and sellers onto one platform.

How does Adyen help Porsche serve its international customer base?

As of today, Porsche and Adyen work together in over 40 countries such as Germany, UK, Spain, Italy, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, the U.S. and Canada. The global reach and scalable payments infrastructure of Adyen offers the necessary conditions to create worldwide new customer services in the fields of Smart Mobility and Online Car Sales.

To welcome Chinese customers at the Porsche Museum or in our Porsche Design Stores, we accept Chinese payment methods such as Alipay, WeChat or UnionPay. Smart payment terminals identify the customer’s nationality by the card type and adjust the language and currency accordingly.

Outside expertise is crucial for moving into new markets. In the partnership with Adyen, we continue our strategic expansion in the growing e-commerce market with various local, international and innovative payment methods. One example is our Porsche Connect business: more than 40 countries have been included since the launch of the current Panamera generation in 2016. Porsche Connect provides over 20 programs and tools, including navigation services, weather, and safety services. And our worldwide customers can use various currencies and many different payment methods.

In October 2019, the 7th Porsche Experience Center opened at the Hockenheimring as part of the ‘Sports Car Together Day’ festival. Here, Porsche is also using Adyen’s payments platform. Doing this, we could quickly offer our business a solution to enable online purchases of Porsche Experience tickets. The same set up is used when welcoming Porsche enthusiasts to our Experience Centers in Leipzig, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.

What is the benefit of an omni-channel payment solution?

By managing payments from different sales channels such as In-store and online, with one system, Porsche can consolidate its customer data into a single view. This makes it easy to provide tailored unified commerce experiences to customers, wherever they are.

Payment data remains a valuable source for companies who seek to better understand their customers and improve their revenue streams. By collaborating with Adyen, Porsche can provide a seamless payment experience to our customers regardless of their location, device or payment method.
