The use of data provides many industries with a boost for their technological development. Be it in the science sector, in healthcare or business. Porsche has launched the Porsche Data Cup to harness the innovative power of data even more effectively for the automobile in the future.

Thanks to their ability to analyze patterns, sometimes in real-time, big data technologies are enabling the increasing individualization of products and the optimization of existing processes. Digital services can thus be tailored even more closely to customers and their needs. The innovations in the field of AI and big data analytics are useful in a wide variety of sectors and are changing consumer expectations as well as product development.

Consumer demands are constantly evolving; users expect intuitive design and services that cater to them. For us as a company, data creates a new, solid foundation when developing products. They not only give us impulses but also help us to quickly test and iterate new ideas. Automobiles are increasingly becoming an ecosystem consisting of far more than just the vehicle. Numerous services will simplify not only driving but also everything around it.

The Porsche Data Cup: Promoting innovation, attracting new partners

This kind of change is not something that anyone can do alone. At Porsche, we have always believed in the power of strong partnerships. Moreover, the determination to innovate is deeply rooted in our DNA. This is also where the idea for the Porsche Data Cup came from.

The open innovation competition was organized by Porsche and the data platform High Mobility and took place for the first time this summer. The participating development teams had the chance to develop and test data-driven business models by getting access to real vehicle data. For this purpose, they had access to the Porsche Car Emulator, a digital image of a vehicle, where applications can be simulated and tested under real conditions. This allowed the development of the prototypes within 12 weeks.

“The open innovation program is important to Porsche because we try to connect to external innovators, individuals, start-ups, but also suppliers” — Andy Grau, Manager Business Development

As part of Startup Autobahn’s Expo Day 10, the three winning projects have now been presented. With AutoLogg, Swiss Re and HDI, three teams have been selected that focus on customer centricity and ease of use. The clever use of data has resulted in products that respond individually to their users, make everyday life easier and enhance the car ecosystem.

Digital logbook for connected cars

AutoLogg developed a digital logbook that is based on the vehicle’s existing connectivity services. The vehicle communicates with the developed software via a programming interface and tracks the journeys in real-time. Compared to previous digital solutions based on GPS data tracked by smartphones, AutoLogg is less prone to errors and requires no additional hardware. Further added value is provided by the assignment of the journeys to different purposes, whereby the data is transferred directly to a tax office-compliant, audit-proof driver’s logbook.

Fast damage registration thanks to AI

The development by reinsurer Swiss Re is also a solution that reduces time, paperwork and labor. Based on AI, sensors installed in the vehicle detect which parts are damaged after an accident and report this data directly to Swiss Re. In addition, photos of the damage can be uploaded, which are analyzed within a few minutes thanks to artificial intelligence. The time it takes to assess a claim is reduced and the resulting costs are determined much more quickly than before. Though it does not only save insurers a lot of time but also creates transparency for the customer.

App awards discounts for safe driving

How can the individual driving behavior of individual insurance participants be positively supported while at the same time ensuring data sovereignty? The HDI team answered this question with an app. In its dashboard, policyholders can determine at any time which vehicle data they would like to share directly with HDI. In this way, policyholders can be positively rewarded for certain behavior, such as the use of assistive driving systems, by receiving an individualized rate based on their driving behavior.

Launch of Porsche Connect Partner Services

“The goal of the Porsche Data Cup is to find new partners to further expand the digital ecosystem for our customers.” — Manfred Wiedemann, Product Management Vehicle Data Business & Analytics

The final of the Porsche Data Cup marks the beginning of Porsche Connect Partner Services (PCPS). The platform gives suppliers access to real-world vehicle data that can be used for product development. AutoLogg, Swiss Re and HDI also benefit from this offer — for their recent win, they receive six months of free access to PCPS.

The platform is now accessible to other partners and is designed to develop a holistic ecosystem around the vehicle in the future. If you would like to get in touch with the team of PCPS, reach out here: pcps@porsche.de
