48 HOURS IN NYC — Media Match
New York offers a very promising ecosystem for European media tech startups. We decided earlier this year to take a selection of our portfolio teams from next media accelerator and some other teams from our European partners’ network (Media Lab Bayern, VRT Sandbox & Elevator Startups) to join us in this adventure to the USA. Our first Media Match NYC Edition was a big success! Let us explain to you more about how it all went.
Tuesday, June 19th — Media Match at SAP Next-Gen Innovation Labs
Media Match is a format that originated in Hamburg in 2017 during the well-known and hype Online Marketing Rockstars (OMR) conference. Every year we bring, for the occasion, 50 media tech startups together with media investors and media executives for two days of matchmaking and pitches.
Our first Media Match NYC Edition was a compact version of the show, where we presented 10 teams followed by a networking session at the SAP Next-Gen offices during just one evening.
As a matter of fact, the matchmaking part is for us the most important, which is also the one that ensures the success of the event. Both teams and participants can register to start connecting and arranging meetings days before thanks to our exclusive matchmaking platform.
Participants at Media Match are only selected guests. Among others, we had this time the visit of investors such as @BDMI — Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments, North Base Media, Genesys Partners, Inc. & Northzone and media executives from The Wall Street Journal, Fusion TV, Inc and The Associated Press.
Of course, we could not have been able to put such a crowd together without the help of Amy Chen, the Director of Entrepreneurship Programs at NYC Media Lab. This set up a fruitful international collaboration between both programs that close up bridges between Europe and USA. We are also very proud to count with the support of a partner such as Google News Initiative both in Europe and in USA. Erica Anderson, US Partnerships Google News Lab US welcomed our startups in NYC.
“NYC Media Lab is pleased to partner with the Next Media Accelerator on building relationships among startup founders, corporate executives and investors who are focused on the future of media and technology. Through the first NYC edition of Media Match, we had the opportunity to learn about the emerging technology applications, such as blockchain, machine learning and virtual reality, that the European startup teams have developed for the media industry. NYC Media Lab is enthusiastic to bridge connections between the startup community in NYC and the innovation ecosystem in Europe.” — Amy Chen, Director of Entrepreneurship Programs at NYC Media Lab
It was a great honor to have among our attendees the German Accelerator, the Director of the Reeperbahn Festival, Alexander Schulz, and the Head of Communications, Ramona Kappmeyer. Philipp Westermeyer, CEO of OMR, was also in town and dropped by!
Wednesday, June 20th — USA / Europe Media Executives & Investors Day
On our second day on tour we landed at the offices of Matter Ventures. Matter supports media entrepreneurs building a more informed, connected, and empowered society through our start-up accelerator in San Francisco and New York City.
We hosted here two sessions for the participating startups from NYC Media Lab, Matter VC, and our own Media Match NYC Edition teams:

- Francesco Marconi ( R&D Chief and Head of Lab @WSJ)
- Jim Kennedy (SVP of Strategy & Development, Associated Press)
- Fielding Kidd (Director of Business Partnerships, Entrepreneurial Engagement Comcast NBCUniversal)
- Kim Bode, Manager, Community and Product Operations News Deeply, Inc.
- Meinolf Ellers (CDO German Press Agency — dpa)
“How to attract investors in the USA/ Europe”
- Graham Brown (LererHippeau Ventures)
- Urs Cete (BDMI Fund)
- Stuart D. Karle (North Base Media)
- Gareth Jefferies (Northzone)
New York has proven to be a great learning experience for us. We could make our case in front of top investors and got time for a review of our product-market approach with US media experts. — Tilo Ferrari, co founder Helloguide.
Every participant could definitely take some valuable learnings home from these sessions. The engagement of the crowd was outstanding! Our main idea is to nurture these connections, create a closer gap between media innovators in USA and Europe and expand the Media Match brand all around where is needed.
