The Friday before they filed for bankruptcy — September 12, 2008 — I was working as a money-market trader for Lehman Brothers in Sydney, Australia. I remember we went to the local pub that evening (ok fine, it was really about 2pm; nobody would trade with us anyway). We thought that by Monday, we’d be employees of either Barclays or Bank of America — that there would be a government-induced ‘shotgun wedding’ in which Lehman would be acquired by one of those firms.
