“I’m sporting a glorious moustache this month, I can’t be seen sipping Prosecco Bellini out of a flute.”

As gentlemen boycott their razors this November, flaunting their macho staches and beards, I can’t help but wonder how their masculinity influences their choice of poison. We all know beer and whiskey are perceived as ‘manly’, but a fair amount of cocktails too have made the cut; including the distinctive Manhattan and Tom Collins, as well as the simple Martini — ‘shaken, not stirred’.

Here are some interesting ones worth trying, if you haven’t already.

Made from whiskey or bourbon and mixed with Amaretto almond liqueur, the Godfather, echoes Marlon Brando’s words from the movie. It’s an offer you can’t refuse. Brickhouse Café’s* molecular version takes it a notch higher with smoked cigar or apple wood.

Negroni combines Campari, vermouth & gin to create a very ‘manly’ aperitif, which should be consumed before a hefty meal to stimulate the appetite. Dome*, at Intercontinental adds the floral Bianco to its version where The Bombay Canteen* mixes the dark Rosso, infusing subtle caramel notes to the drink.

While the L.I.T. is for the boys, supposedly the Old Fashioned is for the men. A powerful concoction of bourbon or rye whiskey with bitters and sugar, Don Draper swigged this drink before his incredibly productive meetings at the ad agency. The ‘Don Draper’ at Monkey Bar* comes with a twist of clove and sugarcane.

Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter how macho your drink is, as far as you enjoy it, that too responsibly. You could very well order a ‘candy floss’ pink Cosmopolitan for your next round, and pull it off as ‘manly’. You never know.

Cheers to all you men grooming your mos for a noble cause.
