Welcome to today’s Insight Studio!

Hope you guys had a wonderful winter break. And Happy new semester!

Every time when we meet someone, greeting and response is a must. As a Chinese, what we normally learn from textbook is:

It looks good, but What is the problem?

Actually I’m fine means: not that good, not positive.

Let’s say, when two people have a row, they might end with a “Fine”. Which means they are totally not good.

Also, “I’m fine” seems just a copy from textbook rather than your real feeling.

Then, what are the expressions that we better to use?

Some universal responds:

  • Not bad (When people use not bad, there is no relationship with bad.)
  • Pretty good!
  • Great! (Never better!)

Some formal sentences:

Maybe say to someone not so close/ not meet for a while.

  • I’m doing well.
  • Things are going well.

Some fun responds:

Use phrase may help your expression more local

  • Can’t complain.
  • Alright. /Doing alright.
  • So far so good.

It normally used when you are talking something that might haven’t finished. For instance, waiter often asks: How is the food? You can answer: So far so good.

(Since you haven’t finish dining.)

  • Same old same old. (Men prefer to use it.)
  • Just surviving. (Normally will say to close friends.)

(Some of the information are cite from “openlanguage”)

Hope this helpful! Please feel free to leave comments and suggestions! I will be happy to see you guys below!
