Living rooms with a small amount of space can be daunting, a common occurrence is that you either end up feeling that the space is too empty or cluttered. In today’s society of micro-living, we’ve had to shrink our living space but it’s hard to shrink our appetites. We want to have everything that we would have if we lived in a bigger space, so we’ve adapted and slowly begun to learn how to make full use of our space so that even after adding our favourite bits and bobs the room looks presentable, organise and aesthetically pleasing. We’ve curated a few tips that will assist you to challenge your small living space to create a decor you’ll love.

Plan your living room layout

The first step that is often overlooked when dealing with a small living room is planning, when space is so limited you want your first step to ensure that the layout will be functional for your needs. When you’re thinking about the functionality of the room think about what the room will be used for most? Whether you’re hosting friends over for movie nights or using the space as a chill-out zone for you and your family. The next step is to then confirm the size of the pieces, from accent pieces to furniture pieces we want everything to fit into the living room perfectly as if you were putting a puzzle together so that they don’t make the room feel too cluttered or too empty.

Add Mirrors for an illusion of space

No longer secret, mirrors are trending at an all-time high. Mirrors are popping up all over our home in a successful attempt to make our living spaces feel bigger, and we’re here to tell you it’s a great way to make your small living room look larger. Mirror work like clever optical illusions which can help to make your living room seem much larger than it actually is, place the mirrors opposite a door or window to reflect more light back into the room. We suggest going with a feature wall that features a panel wall of mirrors, but if that doesn’t quite fit your style we suggest going with a singular larger mirror which can help to instantly double the size of the room.

Neutral walls make the room feel larger

When thinking of a wall colour for your living room we suggest going with a neutral colour palette and natural hues. We suggest going with a white for your wall and ceiling to brighten the room and make it appear larger, but if that look isn’t quite for you we suggest going for colours such as grey or greige which can present undertones that’ll fit your style. Have a look at our blog post “Why Grey Is An Iconic Neutral Within Interiors” for information on how this colour can be used within your home. You can also carry this over to your furniture opting in for furniture that appears light such as glass pieces, or add subtle colour pops to the room through soft furnishing, accessories, and artwork.

Small steps can produce amazing effects

Although our small living rooms can get the better of us sometimes it can take just a little bit of planning and the right information that becomes the fine line between an unorganised and messy looking living room and an organised and aesthetically pleasing one. It can become tempting to get out the sledgehammer and knock some walls down but before you take that route simply implement our three trends can be an amazing option to transforming your living area. Small steps can lead to massive results, and that dream of having a home that’s straight out of a design magazine won’t feel as if it’s a distant dream anymore.
