Think Porch Pirates Don’t Strike in Your Neighborhood?
Think again; if you think you’re exempt from package theft in and around Minneapolis, I assure you (with, unfortunately, no reassurance) that package theft does happen in your neighborhood.
But don’t take my word for it — check it out for yourself! I just wonder, from personal experience, how many people actually report package theft to the police. So often packages are stolen, but assumed lost. We quickly e-mail Amazon to report an undelivered package, thereby launching a “Take 2” mission.
I don’t mean to make you feel uneasy about where you live, but rather to question the safety and security of your online purchases, because from what I’ve been researching, porch pirates strike everywhere! Even though you live in a nice community, package theft likely happens in your neighborhood.
Did you know that the United States Postal Service has the right to stop package deliveries due to theft? That’s what happened to residents of one Milwaukee neighborhood last summer. NextPakk is working through Milwaukee logistics, because with scheduled package delivery, everyone can get their packages. Safely, and securely.
For some information concerning package theft in our home community, The CW Twin Cities offers an interactive crime map where you can check out what’s going on in your neighborhood; from gun violence to sex offenders, traffic violations and theft — you can narrow down your search and see what’s been reported within the past 30 days, and where.
The City of Minneapolis has its variety of crime reports, including neighborhood crime stats (with more data than some of us would like to recognize) as well as a community crime map with interactive stats (choose and click on what you’d like to know).
You can even utilize Trulia to check out crime stats in West Calhoun (91 reported counts of theft?!?).
As for an Amazon package gone rogue, it’s suggested to wait 36 hours before taking action, because it may have been marked as “delivered” prior to its arrival (no — tracking is not down-to-the-minute, like we want to believe). Then again, maybe someone else saw it and decided to help him/herself.
The thing is, regardless of where you live, you’re not exempt from porch piracy. Now, I’m neither a data scientist nor crime analyst. I can’t predict who will strike where and when, and I can’t promise your packages will be safe if left on your front step…or hidden behind a bush (cause nobody else would think to look there if they were desperate…or just plain greedy).
What I can tell you is that online shopping is increasing by the day, and heading into the holiday season we must be cognizant of where our money is (and purchases are) going. Why risk the chance of having your packages stolen? Protect yourself from porch pirates. There is another option.
Schedule your package deliveries with NextPakk. We deliver in your neighborhood — when you’re home.
