What is the WHY part of the work you do?

Many times while I am working on a solution to a problem, I feel disconnected with the interest/passion of solving it and end up solving it just for the sake of ‘finishing the task’. Jaise tese Kaam khatam karna aur ghar jana hai.

Solution to a problem in our terms could be something that you’re developing or designing.

This must have happened to you also and normal coz we humans are wired like that.

But if you’re in an industry of problem solving then its not normal. And not at all good if you’re a kickass problem solver.

So what should we do?

Well there is no perfect answer to this, but there is a small trick which may work:

  • Stop working the moment you realise that you’re not interested in solving the problem but you’re more interested in finishing up the task.
  • Take a step back.
  • Try to remind yourself WHY you’re solving the problem? Do you feel proud about that solution? If your gut says no then thats not the kickass solution.
  • Try to rethink different solutions to the problem.
  • Do this till you get the best shot.

I am not sure whether this will work for you but it has worked for me recently. And one reason why it has worked for me is due to the WHY part of my work. Kickass solutions takes a little more time (but not forever) than the ‘just-for-the-sake-of-it-solutions’.

And the most important part of the trick is the WHY part of the work you do, are your working just coz its letting you earn or are you working coz its letting you learn?

Think about it.

Have a good weekend :)
