Artist Spotlight — Reshidev RK
In the eleventh edition of the Artist Spotlight from the NFT Malayali Community, we are pleased to introduce the artist, illustrator and senior designer turned NFT Artist — — Reshidev RK. Born in the city of Looms and Lore — Kannur, Kerala (state), Reshidev shares that he discovered his passion for art the same day he held a pencil in his life. This vision was fuelled to higher grounds as he pursued his formal education in sculpture at Trivandrum College of Fine Arts. Somewhere during the same, he slowly discovered his eye for illustrations and thus the migration to the advertising industry through Happy Advertising in Bengaluru.
With an enticing array of client lists that includes Wieden+Kennedy, Lee, Diesel, Nike, Royal Enfield, Indigo, Make In India, and many more, Reshidev’s career revolves around as an Illustrator, Senior Designer, and NFT Artist today.
He has also received awards like the One Show and been featured by publications like Wired, Buzzfeed, Vogue, and so on. Among his extensive archipelago of notable digital media appearances, his work for the Wired story — The Lion, the Polygamist, and the Biofuel Scam remains a visual spectacle. Reshidev gained a lot of appreciation in his works for the series ‘ Dear Ma’ — where artists were invited to pay tribute to our mothers through art and set up digital exhibitions as well.
The roots of Reshidev’s inspirations, as he stated in his interview with the New Indian Express, can be found in his hometown — Kannur, the coastal town that hosts the red-clad Theyyam, vast beaches, and abundant history. “Kerala architecture is very symmetric. My fixation with texture, pattern, and symmetry comes from my observations of buildings, places, and things I grew up seeing,” he adds.
Thus his unique strengths are his striking illustrations that are inspired by contemporary discourses and rendered in the colorful style of his home state in India. It is quite conspicuous that the artist performs the concluding flicks and strokes to his artworks with the adroitness and expertise of a carver, reminiscing an early part of his career curve, flawless in its every edges and fringe.
Reshidev made his mark in the NFT space as he entered the Foundation marketplace in August of 2021 when Elwin Charley’s extended the invite for the same. His foundation genesis — the Portrait of Pride shook the scene and literally called out his presence in the same. The portrayal of a spirited and plucky transwoman with their lipstick and eye-shadow transmitting the Pride flag in sharp contrast to their dark porcelain dermis.
Among his next drops included the piece “ God made man-made God “ which received a lot of critical appreciation as well. The theme inspired by the popular folk and ritualistic art forms finds its root in Theyyam — yet another ritualistic art form from his hometown — Kannur.
Today, Reshidev has created 10 artworks in Foundation out of which 6 have found homes.
