The Lamborghini Aventador LP 780–4 Ultimae Coupé NFT auction was a novel way to send off the last manual drive V12, because the next flagship Lambo V12 will feature electrification to a plug-in hybrid powertrain to improve fuel efficiency.

The Lambo was the world’s first one-of-one NFT ever to be auctioned with a physical super sports car, and only available at Sothebys. The actual car will be built after the auction in accordance with the “approved for use” specifications (of the buyer’s country) and will be delivered to the buyer some time before September 2022. Lamborghini will pay transportation expenses for the car but the winning bidder will pay importation costs and taxes.

Lamborghini collaborated with contemporary artists Krista Kim, and Steve Aoki, and brand storytelling agency, Invent Group. Kim, known for her Mars House fame, had created the visual artwork for the NFT along with her signature “Mars Metaverse Sunset” will be applied to the physical Aventador. Aoki created a custom-developed music track for the NFT, as well as an exclusive soundtrack for the physical car, and had consulted on the design of the NFT and physical car customization. Invent Group served to give the last Lamborghini Aventador story meaning and purpose as the first Web3 supercar.

The sale includes not only the actual Lambo, but also a virtual preview into Lamborghini’s future plans; virtual one time calls with Krista Kim and Steve Aoki and a private tour of the Museo Lamborghini in Italy (flight and hotel stay not included).

The NFT is a digital replica of the Aventador saved as a GLB file called “the Very First Lamborghini for the Metaverse. The GLB file is a type of 3D file format used in virtual reality, augmented reality, and games. Meaning that as more applications embrace and incorporate Web3, this Lambo Aventador could be inserted into the metaverse. Not only that, but also inserted into things like racing games or massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) like Grand Theft Auto, or games like REVV Racing, an arcade simulation car racing game that incorporates blockchain technology, developed by Animoca Brands.

There is no word on who ultimately won this unique auction. However, if they wanted to sell the physical supercar they could do so in the near future using Americana. Americana is a startup founded early last year by designer Jake Frey looking to microchip real-world assets turning them into an NFT with the corresponding digital ledger that offers proof of authenticity and ownership. The NFTA Universal Chip will also provide Web 2.0-level security with real-time GPS data. Americana just closed a $6.9 million seed funding round led by Alexis Ohanian’s venture firm Seven Seven Six, with participation from NFT marketplace OpenSea and rapper Future . The company has yet to officially launch.

So there you have it. A winning auction that had an NFT that offers real utility, and a one-of-a-kind physical Lamborghini that could in the near future be sold as a NFT as well.
