NFW: Cocktails — Manhattan, the “half-brother” of Winston Churchill

Legend has it that the Manhattan cocktail originated at the Manhattan Club in New York, during a banquet, in 1874, from the alcoholic imagination of statesman Winston Churchill’s mother, Jennie Jerome, a fine lady who dabbled in spirits and liqueurs to amaze her guests with always very witty inventions.

The Manhattan is one of the most famous cocktails in the world, an immortal classic, excellent as an aperitif, and is prepared with whiskey and vermouth and a few drops of Angostura. The recipe we propose is the original one, based on rye whiskey, although for many years the most popular version was based only on Canadian whiskey.

Ingredients:

5 cl rye whisky or Canadian whisky

2 cl red vermouth

1 Maraschino cherry

1 drop of Angostura, pour into ice before the other ingredients

lemon peel (optional)

Procedure:

In a mixing glass put some ice, add a drop of Angostura and then pour in the rye whiskey together with the red vermouth.

Stir gently until the sides of the glass are moistened and almost frosty.

Place the maraschino cherry in the glass and pour, holding the ice with the julep strainer.

The lemon peel is a suggestion, not included in the original recipe.

OK, now that you have discovered the recipe for one of the most famous cocktails in the history of mixed drinks, let’s move on to the variants.

Manhattan Perfect:

The Perfect lies somewhere in between, in the sense that it involves the same amount of whiskey, but two vermouths are used: 1 cl of dry vermouth and 1 cl of sweet vermouth, the red one. The result is excellent, still velvety, but less sweet and with the flavour of the dry vermouth adding a sharper herbaceous touch.

Manhattan Dry:

As the name suggests, this version of the Manhattan is much drier, pungent and aromatically precise. It is also one of the most credible since the rye is already sweet and caramel-like enough on its own. If we want to contextualise it in the constellation of great cocktails, it corresponds to the cousin of the Dry Martini, let’s say it is the American-style version.
