As the Internet has become intertwined with all aspects of society, states have found themselves on the front lines of cybersecurity. From critical infrastructure and public safety, to health care and education, states are responsible for promoting cybersecurity in more ways than people realize.

In the past few years, governors have signed executive orders, enacted legislation and reorganized state government to confront cyber threats. They are creating cybersecurity commissions, increasing penalties for cyber criminals, integrating the National Guard into cyber response planning and building innovative public-private partnerships to educate the next generation of technology professionals.

During his tenure as chair of the National Governors Association (NGA), Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe launched a new effort to develop innovative cybersecurity solutions called Meet the Threat: States Confront the Cyber Challenge. Gov. McAuliffe and cybersecurity expert Richard Clarke recently joined NGA staff in Washington, D.C., as the first guests for the “Meet the Threat” podcast. The group discussed the initiative, current cyber threat environment and the critical role states play in improving our national cybersecurity.
