Are you one of those people who has always hated the idea of exercise? Have you always wanted to be fit and active, but never had the time or the energy to do so? Luckily, going to the gym or an arduous jog are not the only ways to stay fit. Staying fit can be fun too.

The first step is to understand that exercising is for the benefit of your health — both mental & physical. Though it might sound like a lot of hard work, the end benefits are nothing short of glorious and they make all the effort worth it. So it is necessary that you put commitment and discipline into it to get you started and keep at it. Next, you need to know what works for you. All those recommendations about the new fancy workout regime are good to know but they amount to nothing if you don’t put your heart into it.

So, here is a list of few activities that are a lot of fun even as they burn away all those extra calories.

  1. Dancing

Dancing is the most fun way of losing all those extra pounds. For everyone who likes dancing, all you need to do is blast on some music and get started. A one-hour session of shaking to your favorite Zumba, Hip Hop, Swing Dance, Bhangra or Bollywood chartbusters will leave you more sweaty and exhausted than a one-hour run on the treadmill. That you might end up learning and perfecting a completely new dance form is an icing on the cake. Also, you could make it into a group activity and have your friends join along. Everything’s better with friends around.

2. Running after Kids

This is something that you can try with your kids or even pets. We all know how young kids and pets are always energetic and running around the house. Why not use that opportunity to spend more time with them and burn some calories in the process? Every time your kid/pet goes running to the other room, out in the yard or in the ground go after them. It’s the best exercise you could ever do. This mutually beneficial activity not only helps you stay fit, but it also helps your young ones get the much-needed activity too.

3. Walk and Talk

Technology is the necessary evil of the world that we live in. Out of the 24 hours in a day, we spend close to 2–3 hours talking on the phone in the office or at home. Imagine all the calories that you could burn if you just started walking every time you were on your mobile. You can utilize this time being productive as well as active. Simple, no?

4. Video Games

We know that we are the generation that loves being digitally involved either on the internet or playing video games like FIFA, Dota, Counter Strike and other such games. According to the American Council, you burn more calories standing on your feet than resting in a chair. Standing quietly, a 150-pound person burns about 114 calories per hour, or 912 calories in eight hours. Therefore, if you are spending long hours playing video games, why not burn some calories too. All you need to do is stand and play instead of sitting and playing, and the fun remains the same.

5. Household Chores

Household chores are a necessary routine in everyone’s life but, did you know you could make it into a fitness activity. A lot of the times we don’t realize that we are actually working out and burning calories. All we need to do is streamline and keep a track on our activities. In 1 hour you can burn 177 calories vacuuming, 88 calories washing dishes standing, 170 calories mopping, and 444 calories carrying groceries upstairs. Also, you can make this into a family activity which will make it more fun and involve all your family members.

As John F. Kennedy said, “Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity”. Thus, to have an overall healthy life, it is essential that we exercise irrespective of how we do it.
