Song 1: Dark Fantasy

Nicki Minaj starts the album off with a feminine robotic voice. I thought it was very interesting to have her sound like that but after hearing the lyrics it makes a little more sense.

You might think you’ve peeped the scene
You haven’t; the real one’s far too mean
The watered down one, the one you know
Was made up centuries ago
They made it sound all wack and corny
Yes, it’s awful — blasted-boring
Twisted fictions, sick addiction
Well, gather ‘round, children; zip it; listen

The beginning has a very deep meaning. As I mentioned earlier, Kanye wrote this during a rough time. He was learning the dark sides of being a celebrity. The opening exactly reflects that. Like for example, the first two lines. They are referring to achieving fame. You think you have everything figured out when actually it just all started. This is seen in college sports. For example, you just got out of high school and got drafted to a division one school to play soccer. You have been celebrating this great achievement all summer. When the time comes and you step out to play your first game, your sitting on the bench. Because in reality your hardships have just started.

After the opening, the hook comes into play.

Can we get much higher?
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

There is one main point made in these few lines. This hook is repeated many times throughout the song. The mood is changed from robotic Nicki to a Sunday church choir like that. Kanye does this on purpose. This part is suppose to resemble the good part of fame, which directly contradicts the opening. Since these lines are repeated throughout the song, with 2 really good verses from Kanye, the song is made to reflect Kanye’s best life. But, this song also makes you rethink to the beginning, about the bad sides of fame.

This song as long as it is, 4:41, sets up the album. It does not only give two different view points on fame but also sets up the album as a story about Kanye’s life. This song helps focus on Kanye’s highlights of his life, while keeping in mind that he is human and has downfalls as well.
