We’re Building on The Monument Game with an Open Source Release!

Today, we are doing something that has never been done before at Nifty Gateway: releasing open source code. This is one of the many firsts related to our release of The Monument Game by Sam Spratt, and we hope this will allow artists and creatives to build on the foundation that The Monument Game created. We are very proud of this release and want to commend Sam for being an awesome creative partner with a unique vision that demanded a new standard from our Design & Tech teams.

Nifty Gateway has a history of working closely with premier artists to deliver customized releases that drive the Web3 digital art space forward. Our release of The Monument Game by Sam Spratt continued that tradition with two key technical innovations: (1) a dynamic viewing experience for our most detailed artwork ever delivered on our platform, and (2) the ability for collectors to engage and interact with the work and have that be reflected in the metadata.

We’re packaging both of these features into an open source repository available to all here: https://github.com/gemini-oss/react-image-pan-and-zoom-with-commenting. The repository has all the technical information and documentation you need to set this up, but we’ll cover the main features below.

I. The Zoom Viewer

The centerpiece of The Monument Game is a 1/1 digital painting, so detailed that it demanded a new and dynamic viewing experience.

We set out to build a buttery smooth zooming feature that would allow collectors and appreciators to spend time exploring the immense level of detail in Sam’s artwork. The zoom feature we built is totally bespoke, and allows for smooth pan and zoom functionality for an image without the use of tiling. This component uses React, a popular JavaScript library and can be integrated into a website’s front end. It is optimized for large images with high resolution to ensure smooth performance. This tool allows collectors to get up close and personal with the artwork, creating a more interactive and immersive experience.

II. Leaving an Observation on the Work

In addition to the 1/1 digital painting, The Monument Game allowed collectors of an edition to leave a permanent text observation on the painting allowing the location and text of the observation reflected in the token metadata.

The observation is displayed on the work at the specified coordinates of the collector, enabling the collector to meaningfully interact with the work, engaging in dialog with the artist. With this component, text observations can be toggled on or off on the artwork and are also displayed in a drawer to the left of the artwork.

What’s Next?

We’re eager to see artists use these tools to highlight and elevate their art. We are committed to continuing to build innovative first-class creative experiences with artists and creators.

Let us know if you use this tooling in your own artwork by tagging us @niftygateway! We’d love to see it. If you have a big idea you want to bring to life, our Creative team would love to hear from you at chrislymac@niftygateway.com. Finally, if you have questions about this open source release, please contact us by creating a support ticket at https://help.niftygateway.com/.
