Thanksgiving Turkey Cook Times

On Thanksgiving last year, we spatchcocked the turkey, and it cooked way too quickly. None of the delicious sides were done cooking by the time the turkey started cooling. Which seems like the opposite problem of most of my previous holiday dinners.

Inspired by this blunder, I looked at how different cooking methods and proteins affect time in the oven. All examples are 12 pounds for comparison. Oven temperature and cook time varies.

I’ve enjoyed creating visualizations out of Play-Doh. It’s a great medium to break the normal 2d computer-based constraints of data visualization, and engage with data in a tactile manner. Play-Doh is appealing as a medium because it’s brightly colored, photogenic, and mold-able. And taking something from childhood and elevating it for a different use has a playful, nostalgic feel that’s appealing.

Working with Play-Doh also limits precision. It isn’t going to be perfect, and the end result is ephemeral, but that’s part of the fun. It constrains my perfectionism and lets me focus on the bigger theme. See more Play-Doh visualizations.
