The Nimiq Community Update — Week 12

Welcome to the Nimiq Community Update! This a community contributed weekly write-up on what Team Nimiq have been posting in the official Nimiq discord channel alongside community led projects and content being created for Nimiq. Nimiq.Community will always follow the philosophy of: ‘by the community for the community’.

What is Nimiq?

Nimiq is a browser-based Blockchain designed for simplicity. Nimiq’s reason for existence is to bring the benefits of blockchain technology to the mainstream. To achieve that purpose Nimiq has been built from the ground up to address and break the barriers to entry that inhibit the mainstream adoption of blockchain technologies. Nimiq is encompassed by a strong philanthropic mindset, it will always remain open-source and community-driven.

The road ahead — Nimiq shop, a community whitepaper (?) & prospecting projects

Week 12 brings a quiet front from Team Nimiq as the core team undergo their hack-a-thon that focuses on rewriting the current Node.js client into Rust and the front-end team working towards developing the current UI & Keyguard for the Nimiq safe, wallet and shop.

The official Nimiq shop has seen the production of some of the first Nimiq branded merchandise that will be available for purchase with NIM on launch, whilst prices and UI design are subject to change, the Nimiq shop will be the first example of how the project can be used successfully as a tool for eCommerce.

There has been on-going discussion within the community whether a community-led whitepaper should go ahead and how it would come about, whilst many of you have followed Nimiq for multiple months now, many that have come to discover the project in recent times have had a hard time collecting factual information on the current status of the project such as coin supply, emission, ticker, etc. The community whitepapers’ ultimate goal is to collate all of the technical, philosophical and objective information for Nimiq in one location which in-turn will act as a point of reference in the future.

Moving into the future weeks of the Nimiq community update, the community will be focusing on highlighting, supporting and collaborating with Nimiq-based projects ensuring that developers have the resources they need to maximise growth. Whilst details aren’t available just yet, please be on the look out in the future as more information is released.

Marketing

This week brings no official update with regards to marketing strategy beyond what is known from the Nimiq blog series post for marketing which can be found here. Whilst there has been no official comment, there has been plans put in place in the background to make progress on the marketing front in the near future.

Exchanges & Trade

Week 12 of mainnet brings a dip in the spot price of NIM which follows the general sentiment within the cryptocurrency market for the past week, whilst we’re off the lows (as of writing this post) there has been renewed buying interest as orders for NIM have picked up the price.

BTC-Alpha remains the newest exchange to list NIM with HitBTC still pending.

The entire cryptocurrency market is currently experiencing a recovery with the total market capitalisation at $289,988,704,180 up from $277,064,257,494 week ago according to CoinMarketCap.

Network status, Mining & Transaction volume

Week 12 see’s a stabilisation of the Network as Team Nimiq’s Curd joins as a System administrator and optimisations to parts of the node.js client as well as the uptick in users opting to run a full node come into full effect.

Hashing distribution is slightly better than previous week’s as the share size for Beeppool, Sushipool and Nimbus increases. However centralisation still remains an issue with Skypool and its various subsidiaries taking up 60%~ of the network.

Transaction volume is still following a slow uptrend with two large transaction going through the network (thought to be activations of NET).
