About the National Broadcasting Society and Why You Should Join:

Audio production lab

Public radio is important in today’s society. It gives people a platform to have a voice and fight for what they believe in. Central Michigan University has won many awards, and is known for its student-ran television station and radio program. This school sets itself apart from the rest because, unlike other schools, you can get hands on experience as soon as you begin your freshman year. Many schools have you wait until you are in your junior or senior year. It even has some of the same technology that a professional industry does so that you are better prepared when you go out to look for a job.

According to Central Michigan’s website, the National Broadcasting Society is “a professional networking organization dedicated to putting you in touch with peers and professionals so that you have a network to reach out to when you’re ready to enter your media field of choice!” They do this by holding bi-weekly meetings. At these meetings, they invite speakers, radio hosts, newscasters, and more to talk to the members of the organization and share their experience in the field they chose to pursue. They also hold demo reels and resume workshops to help their members further. Although the students who graduate from the broadcasting program at CMU, the National Broadcasting Society's main slogan is “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” They prove this every meeting by giving the opportunity to make connections with the speakers that come in.

Not only does this organization help its’ members, but they also help the community. One event that was recently held was called “Fleece and Thank You.” At this event, members made blankets for the homeless and gave it to them at a shelter. They also hold fundraisers throughout the year for various causes throughout the community.

Today, we have the privilege of talking to Madison Lewis, the President of the National Broadcasting Society at Central Michigan University. She talks about her position, how students can join, some advantages of joining the organization, and many more. Overall, many of the students that join this organization are broadcasting majors, but other majors could possibly benefit from the available connections made. Listen to the audio to find out more!
