What?

• It’s a set of cards which describe the core product design principle
• The design of the cards should be memorable, specific, directional and inspirational.
• Don’t forget to keep this set visual cards to the product development team

Why?

• To make sure that the product experience is consistent and coherent across the product ecosystem

When and how?

It’s an iterative process. Referring to the product development process, I will suggest to review the product design principle at the following stages:

Define before your start prototyping

01 | Know your user

• Interview your users to collect feedbacks on the challenges that they face while using similar products ( if you are developing a product from scratch) or talk to your existing users ( if you are planning on improving the product)
• Create your persona spectrum (Check our the post by Microsoft)

02 | Know your competitors

• Competitor research — What can we learn from them?
• Read user’s review of the competitor’s product

03 | Brainstorm with the teams

• Learn from the team
• Find out business/ development teams’ expectations
• Define the product design principle together
• Try to consolidate the findings in the product principle card template👇

Review before developing the beta version

• Use the prototype to run usability test with users to collect user feedback
• Share insights with the team
• Review the product design principle together
• Refine the principle if needed (Sometimes you many find that the original set of cards are good enough. If not, it’s a good idea to clarify the principle at this stage before designing.)

Review again before developing launch version

• Similar to the last stage. Talk to your users to collect user feedback
• Share insights with the team
• Review the product design principle again together
• Refine the principle if needed
• Then you are ready to design the launch version
