One of the most underrated features in Medium is Highlights.

It’s one of the most used but also the most underutilized features on Medium. It is actually a fantastic feature to create a sense of community and engage with other members here on Medium.

Considering the recent changes to shift to a more “relational” platform; here are three ways you can really leverage this feature to grow your community.

Highlight — Simple Function

As a reader, you probably already know this. You tap on a line that really stood out to you and it highlights the sentence.

But have you noticed, that if the line has already been highlighted by someone else, it automatically highlights that entire portion? It’s easy to just ‘tap and be done’. Don’t.

Use the cursor and highlight the part that resonated with you. Let the writer know what made you pause or think or chuckle.

Add To the Conversation

This again is a useful method used by many readers on the platform. We use a highlight to add a response.

Don’t be lazy.
