Beyond Pronouns: Gender Pronouns are Changing

Gender Pronouns: What’s in a gender pronoun? — alt-bs: ignorance is bliss

As our world slowly transforms its societal norms, gender roles will too. Not too long-ago women were not allowed to hold any position of leadership over men, now we are considering the option of being a completely gender-neutral society; a world where gender roles have been abolished.

Women have always been held at second place to men. Most terms associated to the term “women” are negative, this word is often associated with dishonesty and behavior that is associated with being anti-family, anti- men, being unable to control sexual urges and worrying.

The LGBTQ+ community is expanding its vocabulary with colorful words to describe human beings and their sexual orientation.

We use language to decipher the world around us. Words are a powerful language tool used to convey messages that help us connect with each other. Tied to language are different connotations.

It seems like every year there is an added letter and new phrases that we must adjust too.

More recently, there has been a lot of controversy around the different gender pronouns and the new ways we must use them.

Here is a list of the new pronouns we currently use,

· He/him/his — used if you identify as male.

· She/her/hers — used if you identify as female.

· They/them/their — used if you don’t typically identify strictly as female or male.

· Can also be used when referring to multiple people.

· Ze/hir/hirs — can replace both he/him/his and she/her/hers.

· Ey/em/eirs — can replace both he/him/his and she/her/hers.

Pronouns are another way to refer to someone rather than their name. We refer to different pronouns every day. Pronouns are the way we refer to our identity. When someone refers to someone else as the wrong identity using the wrong pronouns this can make that person feel disrespected or alienated.

Gender fluid pronouns give women the freedom to excel in different areas of life without them being discriminated against because of their gender. It gives women the space to advance in careers and it changes the traditional norm of gender roles.

This means women can be treated fairly in workplaces, regarding pay and different issues with workplace harassment.

At first, I was hesitant to the reversal of the already embedded English language, I thought the idea of gender fluid pronouns would only hurt and confuse all generations with an identity crisis. Then my belief changed when I realized, I, a women could benefit from this change. I considered the option of not being seen as a woman but instead to be seen as a force, neither He or She but rather known for my intellect, skills, and personality. Being gender neutral would force others to see me as the multifaceted human being that I am.

Essentially, eliminating certain gender-based vocabulary can connect humanity as a whole and make women’s rights issues a human rights issue. This means women’s rights would not have to be just a problem women deal with this will connect all people Men, women, and other genders not mentioned, and they issue women face will receive more support from all genders.
