Communicate
We want to enable self-expression and create opportunities for genuine conversations. The way we communicate builds authentic relationships between New Kind team members and with our clients.
Mindsets
What are the agreed perspectives we hold for communication?
Take the time to listen first, then respond instead of react. Aim to speak directly, clearly, and inclusively.
Habits
What habits nurture how we communicate?
INDIVIDUALLY
Clarify internal thoughts and motivations through regular reflection
What techniques do you use to clarify what you really want? Consider journaling, talking with a coach, meditating, or mapping your thoughts on a whiteboard somewhere.
Encourage yourself and others to question and ask why
Remember to ask why. Then ask why again. And again. Until you understand the situation at the deepest level. Assume positive intent, and always start from positive intent yourself.
Make yourself available for conversation
Use private slack channels. Better yet, go on a coffee date or a walk around the neighborhood. Denali is a good room for private conversations in the office. Let others know your habits, and try to be as available as you can to those around you.

2 PEOPLE
Practice mindful listening and non-judgement for a productive dialogue that ensures both people feel heard and respected
Let the other person complete their thought before starting to speak. Notice your brain’s natural tendency to judge what you hear. Respond thoughtfully instead of reacting to a judgement based on whether you agree or disagree.
Make new New Kinders feel included and welcome
Go out of your way to make sure everyone has a chance to speak their mind. There are no stupid ideas. Say hello in the morning. Feeling distant from a particular team member? Go to lunch.

3+ PEOPLE
Create space for all voices to be heard by ensuring everyone has a seat at the table
Literally, make sure everyone has a seat around the table. Be aware of the introverts in the room and encourage them to share their thoughts, or allow them an alternate route for expressing their ideas (like splitting into smaller groups for conversations, or allowing time for individual writing and reflection). Stay engaged, and listen to everyone’s ideas, whether or not you agree with them.
As facilitators we are aware of the dynamics in the room. We ensure conversation is inclusive and supports the goal.
Don’t be afraid of honest disagreement as part of the creative process. Always remember the “why.”
Explore ways to check the pulse around the organization regularly
Participate in ongoing efforts to measure progress for creating the culture of open communication we’re striving for.
