Nothing beats working for yourself. Even when you love your job and think that it’s rewarding, the satisfaction you get when you are your own boss is a completely different feeling.

While it may seem alluring venturing into a new market, especially if you are a startup, it can be tricky, and let’s face it, pretty risky too , you are putting in more hours than at a 9–5 job elsewhere, and there will be moments where you may actually be sacrificing a lot more than just your time.

But that’s the thing about startups — they give such crazy ideas a chance and somehow manage to make it really big. We’d like to give you a list of some highly succesful startups that began with one crazy idea that ended up bringing them the big bucks.

1. Airbnb

Hotels have experienced strong growth since 2008, but alternative accommodations like Airbnb have been chipping away at their market. The market projects private accommodation bookings will grow from 12% to 16% of total bookings this year. The trouble is that the amount of pressure being felt within the hotel industry to adapt doesn’t meet the danger that faces them.

The numbers are a testament to the site’s success — Airbnb hosts 300,000 listings and has helped more than 4 million travelers book stays. While they’re now a $2.5 billion company, They are expanding to 81,000 cities and 191 countires. It has formed a new trend in the accomodation industry.

2. The Smashing Place

Have you ever intentionally broken a plate? I’m talking about when you’re stressed or angry, and you just hurl the thing across the room and watch with a real sense of pleasure as it smashes against the wall. Feels pretty good, right? You might even feel the stress or anger leak right out of you.

Well, that’s the whole idea behind The Smashing Place. This business, located in Tokyo, allows clients to come in, buy a plate or a cup of their choice, and smash it against a concrete wall. They can swear, stomp their feet, or do anything else they want to relieve stress. This startup tries to solve the anger problem of the people, they are looking to expand to as many countires as possible.

3. Lane Bryant

Plus-sized fashion has come a long way since Lane Bryant has founded it in the early 1900s. The brand — which once advertised for “stout” women — has transformed into one of the leaders. Lane Bryant has realigned itself as what parent company Ascena Retail calls a “purpose-driven brand.”

The interest in the plus-sized clothing market has increased due to the increasing levels of obesity and eating disorders that plague a large number of individuals. The plus-sized clothing industry has supplied the masses with fashion choices that they desire. While the market for plus-sized clothing is valued at $20.4 billion, according to NPD data, Lane Bryant believes that could grow into a $50 billion business. We’re seeing small, independent brands be much more successful in this market than larger brands and retailers.

4. Hangover Helpers

The thought of having to make yourself something to eat and then clean up that colossal mess is just too much to handle.

Hangover Helpers help their hung over clients crawl back into the land of the living with as little pain as possible. These guys show up at your house armed with a breakfast burrito and Gatorade for you. They then clean every room where the party happened. This includes cleaning dishes, pots, and pans, and recycling all of your beer bottles. This company has made its own niche market starting from scratch, they have been featured in Forbes and CBS. They have enough business to keep them busy as long as they want. It might seem as a unconventional idea but is developing a new market in itself.

Ask any entrepreneur what the most strenuous thing about launching a startup is, and chances are they’ll tell you the same thing: funding. Indeed, raising the capital you need to get your startup off the ground is time-consuming. It’s for this reason why most startup founders choose to compete in startup pitch competitions.
