We’d like to introduce , one of our Author Accelerator members. Cynthia Surrisi will be the keynote speaker at SCBWI Carolinas 2019 Annual Conference in Charlotte, NC later this year. We invited her to sit down for a little interview to talk about her upcoming appearance. So without further ado, here is Cynthia!

Q: Tell us all about your upcoming appearance!

Cynthia: I will be presenting at the SCBWI Carolinas 2019 Annual Conference in Charlotte, NC which runs from September 27 through 29.

Q: What is the title of your presentation?

Cynthia: I am a keynote Speaker and the title of my presentation is THE ABSTRACTION OF CURIOSITY, IN OTHER WORDS HOW DO I GET PUBLISHED. I am teaching a workshop entitled WRITING THE MIDDLE GRADE MYSTERY. I will also be doing critiques.

Q: What is your workshop about?

Cynthia: Here’s the description of my breakout session:

Writing the Middle Grade Mystery: Do you want to write a middle grade mystery but don’t know how to get started? This session will explain how the middle grade sleuth is uniquely different from all others, and how to fashion a setting and framework in which she or he can navigate successfully to solve a crime. While each mystery is different, they are all built upon a structure that is well known in the mystery writers’ world. Learn these essential elements that include: sleuth character development, compact setting, things you must know before you start, fleshing out backstory, choosing victims, selecting the crime, defining the suspects, lining up the clues and red herrings, and plotting the four acts. In addition — remembering to add the heart and humor! Also, learn the considerations for multi-book series, and much, much, more!

Q: What do you like best about this conference? Why would you recommend it to other writers?

Cynthia: It’s an intensively craft-based conference and there is a lot of mutual support and respect among the
attendees.

Q: What advice do you have for writers who are attending the conference?

Cynthia: Come ready to have your curiosity stimulated.

Q: What did you do to celebrate being asked to be the keynote speaker?

Cynthia: Cashed the check!

Q: What are the next steps in your career?
