Celebrating a book coach’s success
We’d like to introduce , one of our Author Accelerator members. Jen Braaksma recently became a certified book coach. We invited her to sit down for a little interview to talk about her experience. So without further ado, here is Jen!
Q: Okay, Jen, how did you come to book coaching? Were you a writer looking for a way to dive deeper into the craft? A coach hoping to expand or enhance your services? Were you entering book coaching totally fresh?
Jen: I’ve been writing for a long time, but knew I needed expert help. That’s when I discovered Jennie and book coaching. I worked with Jennie for two manuscripts and learned so much about her philosophy on writing, story and creativity. Since I’m also a high school English teacher, experienced in offering
constructive and encouraging feedback, I realized I could combine my interests in writing and teaching.
Q: What was your experience in the Advanced Training and Certification course? What did you find most satisfying? What did you find most challenging?
Jen: I loved working with my practice clients. It’s one thing to do the (very useful) exercises in the course; it’s another to be face-to-face with the writers whose work you’re looking to help improve. At first the challenge for me was keeping my eye on the big picture of the stories, but with time and practice, I feel much more confident about that now.
Q: What is the most valuable piece of advice you’re taking away from the training?
Jen: To respect that it’s the writer’s story. When I talk to writers about their work, I always seem to have a million ideas and am so excited to share them — but ultimately, I remind myself that I am here to help asa guide. While I share my expertise and my knowledge, the story is ultimately the writers’. I feel a lot of satisfaction in knowing I’ve helped a writer bring something important to life.
Q: Do you plan to coach writers in your own business?
Jen: Yes. I plan to set up my own coaching business — but I’m still in the very early stages (still working on my website!) I want to take the time to plan it out and get it right so I can be clear to my clients what I can offer them. But for now, I can be reached at email@example.com.
Q: What are you going to do to celebrate your certification achievement?!
Jen: A bottle of wine and a family dinner — that’s all I need. :)
