Celebrating a writer’s success

We’d like to introduce , one of our Author Accelerator members. Nancy Yeager recently finished her manuscript. We invited her to sit down for a little interview to talk about his experience. So without further ado, here is Nancy!

Q: Okay, Nancy, can we have the basics about your project and your book coach?

Nancy: My book, Three Husbands and a Lover, is a historical romance novel. I worked with book coach, Sheila Athens.

Q: How long did you work with Author Accelerator on this manuscript?

Nancy: I worked on this manuscript with Author Accelerator for 4 months.

Q: How does it feel to have finished?

Nancy: It feels exhilarating! And a bit sad. Some post-first-draft blues are typical for me as it’s time to move away from playing in the world of these characters. There’s still a lot of revision left ahead of me, but it’s never the same as that rush of creating the story.

Q: What did you do to celebrate?

Nancy: You caught me. I’m terrible at celebrating writing milestones. I would say taking a break from writing new pages so I can focus on discovery for the next book, but that sounds a lot like more work (albeit fun work!) than celebration. I’ll have to think about a celebration. I’m open to suggestions!

Q: What’s next for your book?

Nancy: A full manuscript reread, revisions, more revisions, beta readers. And then — you guessed it — more revisions. It will then go through a couple rounds of editing in July and August, and I will publish it at the end of September as the third full-length novel in my Victorian Romance series. (I finished the second novel in the series last December, also with Sheila’s help.)

Q: What are the next steps in your writing career?

Nancy: Speaking of the Victorian Romance series, the book I finished in December goes on sale at the end of May! And Three Husbands will follow in September. There are three still-to-be-written books in the series that will come out in 2020.

I also finished a Women’s Fiction manuscript (with Sheila! Are you sensing a theme?) last summer, and it’s currently on submission with agents.

And my writer bio says I’m plotting the perfect crime for my Nordic Noir mystery set in Copenhagen. Some day I should probably get some words on the page for that one.

Q: Why would you recommend coaching?

Nancy: For me, the two most important benefits of coaching are accountability and course correction. I’m pretty self-motivated, but there were weeks that I would have only written a few pages or might have skipped writing altogether if Sheila hadn’t been waiting for my weekly submission. I’d estimate I saved at least a month, maybe two, of dithering and just got it done because my coach was the world’s best accountability buddy.

Also, each I started to go off the rails, either in the pages or in my plan, she helped me work through the issues, sometimes necessitating revision and resubmission, to get back on track. I am finally finishing manuscripts that don’t have fatal flaws or gaping logic holes, so my first drafts read like third or fourth drafts, and revisions aren’t nearly as onerous as they were pre-coaching.

Q: Do you have anything you would like to share about the coaching process or your coach specifically?

Nancy: I loved coaching so much, I’ve decided to become one myself! I hope I can be as helpful to other writers as Sheila and the whole Author Accelerator team have been to me.

Thanks so much for taking the time to talk with us, Nancy. And again, congrats on your huge accomplishment!
