Celebrating a writer’s success

We’d like to introduce Rachel Sa, one of our Author Accelerator members. Rachel recently finished Also Elizabeth and we invited her to sit down for a little interview to talk about her experience. So without further ado, here is Rachel!

Q: Okay, Rachel, can we have the basics about your project and your book coach?

Rachel: My book, Also Elizabeth, is a young adult novel I’ve been working on for 2 years. I worked with book coach Julie Artz.

Q: How does it feel to have finished?

Rachel: To have a finished draft of a manuscript — for the first time since I completed my MFA nearly 10 years ago — is both humbling and surreal.

Before I came to Author Accelerator, I truly believed I would never again complete a manuscript. Your coaching helped me get there — and helped me believe in myself as a writer again.

Q: What did you do to celebrate?

Rachel: I achieved the milestone of my manuscript draft during a writer’s retreat with fellow Author Accelerator student, Vicky Bell, at my family’s Muskoka cottage. Vicky and I popped a bottle of sparkling wine. Then we danced around the kitchen to Shakira’s “Try Everything” while clutching a plush doll of Virginia Woolf that Vicky and I bought together at the UBC bookstore during our MFA. TMI?

Q: What are your next steps?

Rachel: I’ve already signed up for How to Revise a Novel beginning on December 8!

Q: Why would you recommend coaching to get to a finished draft?

Rachel: There is no question that I would not have finished this draft without Julie Artz’s authentic encouragement, her skilled critiques, and her tough love. She kept me coming back to the page — even when it felt daunting. And Julie seemed to know when to give me just the right amount of space — and when to call me out on my procrastinating! I’ve completed an MFA in creative writing and I have two traditionally published books under my belt, but I couldn’t have done this without Julie.

Q: Where can people follow you and your writing journey?
