Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad

When I think of relaxed travel, nothing says it like train travel — and if you have an opportunity to experience the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad, you won’t be disappointed. Starting at the Wappocomo Station, just outside Romney, WV, we boarded the Club car for their daily 1:00 pm Trough Trip. The “trough” parallels the Potomac River through a wonderfully scenic, green gorge — along what’s known as the South Branch.

The train trip is narrated as it passes many historical places; but, if you want to hear the history, I’d suggest sitting near the narrator. The sound system could be clearer at the far end of the cars.

We were lucky enough, however, to ride in a car with Rob Wolford, a local historian, who could explain the entirety of the period from the French/Indian war through the Civil War.

The train offers a three-course meal in the Club Car and for those in coach, there’s a concession car with all sorts of snacks and drinks. The meal was wonderful and the desserts were homemade and fabulous. Endless coffee made us happy campers.

Midway through the tour, passengers were given the opportunity to transfer to an open-air car to get 360° views of the canyon. Everyone was on the lookout as this is home to numerous American Bald Eagles.
