A Word from the Guy Who Just Finished Illustrating That Children’s Book

color me bitter

I spent all summer
perfecting those panels,
retracing my lines,
bedaubing enamels,

layering textures,
applying acrylics,
wielding my wizardry
of graphical gimmicks.

Weaving verdant hills,
planting shady banyans,
shepherding rivers through
crimson-dyed canyons,

conjuring landscapes
with otherworldly features,
densely inhabited by
Seussian creatures.

Our illustrious “author”
well — she was done in a day,
she’s now sipping cachaça
by Guanabara Bay.

I rolled my eyes
innumerable times
at her harebrained prose
and ham-fisted rhymes.

Her” characters? Yeah, right,
not by a long shot —
I brought them to life,
not that old crackpot.

The act of creation
sure can be fulfilling;
But wait … the bitch wrote like nine lines
and she gets top billing?

Sometimes I write introspective, self-pitying verse, but always with a tinge of facetiousness.
