Be Still My Liver

an ode to the bottom shelf

Be Still My Liver

I’m mainly a wine and beer kind of guy
I steer mostly clear of the whiskey and rye

On any one given day of the week
I stay below twenty proof — so to speak

Give me a pale ale, a cloudy hefeweizen
A full-bodied lager my taste bud delights in

A Chilean Malbec or a Portuguese red
Magic as it slowly goes to my head

A tart Sauvignon Blanc, from Down Under
A musty Muscatel abounds in wonder

Well drinks and cocktails never floated my boat
My wagon is hitched to Reinheitsgebot

But when out on the town, every now and again
I get a craving — for a tonic and gin

I rarely ask for Bombay Sapphire
Settle for Gordon’s, not a grade higher

Other times a real Mojito does the trick
Bacardi on ice, mint and lime with a kick

Creamy egg-white Peruvian Pisco
A touch of maracuja and my mouth is at the disco

I love me some cachaça — sugar cane liquor —
Chase it with farofa — it’ll go down quicker

And when I get that sweet tooth, during happy hour …
I cure that affliction with an Amaretto sour

To those who call me a drunk I say —
"Quitting’s easy … I do it every day!”

Cheers
