Blue for our blue scattered, nitrogen skies
Blue for embracing oceans deep blue and wise
Blue for our sense of justice I’m told is innate
Blue for blue-blooded rich who won’t abrogate
Blue for blue-collar, the working, the poor
Blue for denim jeans by lapping, blue shore
Blue for sapphire and blue aquamarine
Blue topaz, turquoise, and a larimar sheen
Blue for how very rare: as in a blue moon
Blue for unexpected: a bolt out of the blue
Blue for blue hearts who don’t feel their belonging
Blue for their loneliness, blue for their longing
Blue for blue velvet ants, (actually wasps),
Blue for blue lives matter — but NOT just the cops
Blue self-inflicted, human-race bruise: black and blue
Blue words and blue deeds we can’t easily undo
Blue for the blue states, and blue for red states too|
Because without all of us no blue greatness is new
Blue in the face screaming: still, our rivers are swollen
Blue for the blue pill because the red pill is stolen
(There’s also the blue of the hyacinth macaw
So dearly endangered we’ll soon lose them all)
But let’s return to the lockdown skies of clear blue
When together we huddled, grumbled, and knew
That our little blue marble suspended in a sun beam
Is all we have of each other, a vivid, blue dream
It’s like that blue…
