The stand-up comic at the subway station
Thought about how she had gotten here.
She finally reached her destination
By working so hard year after year.

From just an open mic, she started very small.
Her first audience was no more than eight
Then she moved up to a banquet hall.
“Fifty people now, I am almost doing great.”

Her manager said, “Put your shows online.”
Then her audience grew to a hundred and eleven
But she had to be bigger to make her feel fine.
“Six hundred is OK, but I need to get to seven.”

With a lot of work, she got a big show,
Her name and picture right on the poster.
Her fame was really beginning to grow,
Just about to pop, like toast in a toaster.

In the subway station, at her destination:
The Tonight Show audience laughed till they were sore,
But she didn’t quite feel that feeling of elation,
For she couldn’t help but feel that she wanted something more.

Working and waiting to hear the train’s ding:
That next big stop, but she couldn’t take pleasure
And forgot the very most important thing:
The ticket to ride was the genuine treasure.
