What are we supposed to eat?

What is this — what, are you mad?
Using salt? No — salt is bad.

Sugar? Now, what are you thinking?
Sugar’s deadly — and you’re drinking

Coca Cola. Holy smoke.
Never catch me guzzling coke

All I drink is filtered water
and the other day, I bought a

juicer — you’ve not lived until
you’ve had beetroot juice and krill,

seaweed smoothie, olive oil,
veg grown in organic soil,

no, I never eat red meat
though it’s not as bad as wheat.

Funny, though — we’re all obese,
eating less, avoiding grease,

doing workouts at the gym -
nothing seems to make us slim.

Turn the clock back fifty years
eating didn’t hold such fears –

apple crumble, corned beef hash
shepherd’s pie with creamy mash,

hot-pot, malt-loaf, mutton stew,
cake and custard, trifle, you

cleared your plate and then you licked it
salt and sugar weren’t restricted.

Health advice? You simply ate;
no guidelines to set you straight

yet the term obesity
was unheard of — so maybe

so-called experts are mistaken.
Would you pass the eggs and bacon?
