I was once in Berlin…

I was once in Berlin or in Stuttgart or Wien
But you get the picture
On a grey afternoon seeing her made me swoon
At her every feature

I went back to the store just to see a bit more
of this German cashier
I bought frozen foods, Rosenkohl, and dried fruits
And she wore cashmere

To the left on her breast was her name: “Frau Fest”
And that seemed appealing
I moved gingerly up and said, “Here’s my card”
But this time with feeling

She ignored me at first, so I bought liverwurst
Not to look so foreign
Then “danke,” I said, and she seemed kinda glad
To see me alone

She handed me a receipt with some German script
And a coupon moreover
So I asked, “Fräulein?” but to that she said, “Nein”
And I knew it was over

I went back to the States, where we have different tastes,
And my friendly cashier
On Saturday nights sometimes wears tights
But no cashmere.
