It’s Not Just A Phase

I think I would know

--

“I’ve got this girl I really want you to meet,

her name is Maria, she’s a real treat.”

It exploded out of my mouth in a burst,

Her look of disappointment hurt the worst.

“I thought I might ask her to the dance next week…”

I didn’t break eye contact until she turned her cheek.

My own mother disapproved of my crush,

As I waited for her answer, my face was flush

I whispered, “so, what do you say mom?”

She replied, “It’s just a phase honey, you can’t take a girl to prom.”
