We hardly need reminding
what keeps doctors away;
instead of pills, injections, tests —
a piece of fruit’s the way.

If you believe the Bible,
an apple might have been
the snack that caused expulsion
from Eden’s fields and streams.

But now we’ve lots of apples
in orchards growing free,
they must have taken pips with them
to plant those apple trees.

Some people rarely eat fruit,
their dog-breath is intense;
to freshen tongue and palate
an apple would make sense.

Cooked apples can be good too,
just ask Madame Tartin;
a tart turned topsy-turvy
in a caramelly pan.

And if you’re constipated
drink water to hydrate,
then crunch a tasty apple
your lump to liberate.

So if your doctor turns up
his toolbox on display —
hand him a crispy apple
and send him on his way.
