Ode to Giacomina, Who Goes by Laura

Sofinisba Anguissola — Self-Portrait

Our editorial staff
has a welcome edition,
she’s a singularly talented
verbal clinician —

She hails from London
and that ain’t no crime,
keeps our lights on during
Greenwich Mean Time.

First name’s Giacomina,
her folks Italiano,
she serves bangers and mash
with lots of oregano.

She burst onto the scene
with a rhyme about Doctors,
quickly curated by
Medium’s e-proctors,

then the one about Dax
and I’ll say … doggone it!
This poet sure knows
how to spin a fine sonnet!

Big Sweaty Martha,
stellar Miss Robson,
each a clever-crafted
character concoction …

And how about that tour-de-farce,
her Canterbury Tale,
whose wit and sheer audacity
doth astound without fail!

My fellow merry punsters
thought we were plenty funny,
but these new wave Brits are handing
us a run for our money ; )

On behalf of myself,
Miss Mary and Harper,
may out little word press
long live and prosper!

The cover art is by a remarkable Italian Renaissance painter born in Cremona, Sofonisba Anguissola. I read over the holidays in the NYTimes that the Prado in Madrid is running an exhibit featuring her and another contemporary.

poetry that dares to be funny, edgy, irreverent
