Pay It Forward

When someone does a thing for you, turn right around and do it, too

Pay it forward, many say,
Keeps selfishness and greed at bay,
So when somebody else is kind
I’m sure it’s not too hard to find
A way for you to pass along
The kindness that will then prolong
This lovely generosity
That counters our pomposity
By spreading love and smiles and cheer,
If to this plan we would adhere:
When someone does a thing for you,
Turn right around and do it, too.
This makes the world a kinder place
Filled with a touch of added grace.
The man ahead has payed your toll,
Don’t let it stop with that one soul,
But let his act be your own sign
To pay the toll for next in line.

I had a chance the other day
To Pay it Forward in this way
When $7, I surmised,
Would cover food and curly fries.
But when I handed her my money,
Arby’s girl said, “Oh, no, honey,
See that man ahead of you?
He paid his meal, and your meal too,
So do you want to pass…
