I imagine reading this in the voice and mannerism of an English governess, perhaps Julie Andrews as Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music, or Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series.

Rhinoceri

The plural of
rhinoceros
may not be quite
so obvious,
to pupils
of English
old and young.

If I call them
rhinoceri,
well, we may not see
eye to eye —
you’ll claim
it was a slip
of my tongue.

If you ask them
directly,
you’ll learn,
evidently,
that they don’t
know grammar
from their dung.

The right answer is —
Who knows!
So let’s just call them
RHINOS,
and our squabble
won’t be nearly
so far flung!

The End
